Minutes of the OLPS Alumni Meeting
OLPS Minor, Sorsogon City

Meeting Proper

The meeting was called to order at 8 PM with Atty. Jess Fumera presiding. Mr. Totep Perez read the minutes of the previous meeting. The body approved the contents of the minutes of the meeting.

Atty. Fumera led the group in the discussion of the matters arising from the previous meeting:

1. On Rice subsidy :

Mr. Tato Marcial reported that 10 seminarians are having difficulty in complying with the required 3 sacks of rice yearly, thus, a shortfall of 30 sacks in the year.

Fr. Egay Cleofe informed the group that he will provide names of those seminarians and inquired if they will become direct beneficiaries of the Alumni Foundation and in effect, they are no longer obliged to give the required sacks of rice. The group discussed on the matter and arrived at the decision that the OLPS is the sole beneficiary of the Alumni Foundation who will receive directly the rice subsidy. It is now the discretion of the OLPS administration if they will still require the 10 seminarians to give rice.

Mr. Bernie Donor informed the group that per sack costs P1,250 per sack or P25 per kilo, thus a total of P37,500.00 for 30 sacks of rice shortfall. It was suggested that the Alumni Foundation will write letter to NFA Manager to purchase rice, Totep to draft the letter, Monsignor Monje to sign. The source of fund will come from donations from alumni, post the information at alumni blogspots.

2. On Financial Statement :

Mr. Joey Cubias, the Alumni Treasurer was absent. Mr Tom Sementela suggested that Mr. Perez must remind Mr. Cubias to submit the records of transactions for him to prepare the Financial Statement.

3. On General Information Sheet:

Atty. Tootsie Cubias was absent, again, Mr. perez was tasked to remind Atty. Cubias to submit the General Information Sheet.


4. On Alumni Directory:

Mr. Marcial to coordinate with the Registrar Mam Nikki Halcon, Sr. Myrna Dioquino & Atty. Cubias.


5. On Fellowship Night:

Mr. Perez reported that he met Atty. Alwin Talde who informed him that Batch 83 had a meeting in Manila to discuss their sponsorship of the event by shouldering the financial cost and possible production of Film Documentary about OLPS c/o Film maker Larry Manda.


6. On Destroyed Fence:

Mr. Marcial took picture of the damaged portion and posted the same on the blog. However, Fr. Cleofe informed the group that there is a plan to construct an access road in the same area. Atty. Fortes suggested that the group must remove the item from the Alumni’s concern based on the aforementioned plan. The group agreed.


7. On Tarpaulin Banners:

The group decided to put the item for further discussion next meeting.


8. On Establishment of Alumni Affairs Office:

Mr. Perez informed Fr. Cleofe on the rationale behind the establishment of an Alumni Affairs Ofice. Fr. Cleofe said that seminarians are capable to be assigned, for the meantime at the alumni desk that will soon be transformed into an office. Mr perez will draft a formal letter of request to the Rector, Msgr. Monje to sign & discuss details with Fr. Cleofe, the Rector.

Next meeting will be on August 1, 2008, 7PM at the Fatima Parish. Having no other matters to be discussed, the meeting was adjourned at 9:15PM.

Agenda will include, among others, the points raised and discussed during the previous meeting (minutes here)

i have no idea yet about the plans re from the OLPS minor or from B83 but they could surely use our help. ok?

one of the problems frequently encountered is communicating will all the sano. perhaps some sano there in sorsogon can help out Ms. Halcon or whoever is in charge of OLPS Alumni Relations to send out letters/emails/text to all sano about the foundation activities.

suggestions are most welcome here and i'll email them to padi rector and to gerry arnedo (b83) and also circulate them via our mailing list.

apologies tabi to all sanos who emailed me and got no response. i forgot to check olpseminarista mailbox for the past 3mos!!!! grabe. work got in the way of managing this blog hehehe.

1. to start off, me i'd encourage them to take a year off and just bum around and travel. see what its like being out in the world. well, thats what i would have done if given the chance to do it all over again hehehe.

The problem with the future is that we don’t know how it will unfold. We can make some logical predictions based on history and observation, but there is always that x of an unknown that no one can anticipate. The vastness of predictive studies, and you can add the unscientific ones, could only comprehend things that have transpired.

Neat intro, huh? No? I thought I’d make a great impression. So what am I anxious about? In two measly weeks (as of the time I’m writing this piece) I’ll be joining the club of the big four-oh; entering the twilight zone where, they say, everything gets bad or good depending how you live your life. I’m the eldest in the batch so I get to become forty first. This post is about being that.

sorry for the late posting. i received news from tato marcial (b87) that haile frivaldo's (b83) dad passed away sometime last week.

our condolences nad prayers to the frivaldo family...

man, this is super amazing. its beyond belief!

its been kinda slow here lately, nothing new interesting comin up. but still this post has a "seminary" - in a tangentially religious kind of way maybe- relevance hehehe.

Big congrats to Larry Manda for winning as best cinematographer for the movie "Maling Akala" in the recently concluded Cinema One Originals Digital Film Festival.

heh, its been a slow month here so i'll liven things up a bit... if you're still disappointed with how your life turned out after you went out of the seminary then read this and maybe you'll find something inspiring or whatever. who knows you might be the next tom cruise :-D

Remember the legendary english teacher Ms. Resurreccion and the equally legendary required english lit topic --Beowulf? Here's Gibbs' entertaining writeup about them... (i hope ms. rexy is doing fine these days, any news about her?)

Aha, so it's pronounced “BAY-wulf.” All these years my high school classmates and I have pronounced it “BEE-wulf,” like how were taught in English literature. The release of the movie should prompt us to consider holding one of our usual reunions just so we could officially adopt the proper pronunciation of the name.

You see, “Beowulf” isn't just a story to us. Mention the word, and it brings back a lot of happy memories. We're silly sentimental SOBs like that.

We learned about Beowulf and Grendel and Grendel's monster mother not from Neil Gaiman, but in traditional high school English literature. I'm not sure if students today are still taught this old English epic poem. Our teacher was Mrs. Resurreccion, a white-haired, motherly, tiny bird of a lady, all 4'11" of her (perhaps even shorter).

one of the activities during the homecoming was tree planting. this is a good idea since OLPS is almost arot na with most of the tress felled down by past typhoons.

so if you should find yourself in sorsogon one of these days, take a little time out to plant a tree in OLPS. it would be cool to go back again in a few years or so and see your tree all grown up di ba?

this jolted me a bit when i read inquirer.net today. seems like a sorsogon priest has been excommunicated. his name sounds familiar but i dont remember his face at all. anyways here's the story

A Catholic priest from Sorsogon, excommunicated by the Church for breaking the “seal of confession,” said on Thursday he planned to appeal his case before Sorsogon Bishop Arturo Bastes and the Catholic Church hierarchy in the Philippines.

Father Alejandre V. Galias told the Philippine Daily Inquirer that he would seek an audience with Bishop Bastes and explain his side. He said he would ask the bishop to revoke his excommunication and restore his authority to perform his priestly duties.

When interviewed on Thursday, the 58-year-old priest said he was continuing his normal routine as priest. But when asked if he was still saying masses, Galias refused to comment.

Galias said he found his excommunication questionable as he was not given due process.

In a decree dated September 21, 2007, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Sorsogon declared the penalty of “latae sententiae excommunication” against Galias

Sige share tayo ng ating first day or first night sa OLPS. Sige ako muna:

Jet:
I was very nervous coming to the seminary. I absolutely didnt know anybody coz i was the only one from Castilla. Most of my classmates had friends who were also incoming freshmen and were classmates during elementary. Everything was bit strange- the people, the smell of the dorm and the CR. the dorm with its rows of bed covered with white bed covers reminded me of a hospital.

I had fun arranging my stuff in the cabinet. i felt like a grown-up. It amused me also that my mother religiously followed the clothing list given by the seminary - so i vividly remember having 12 pairs of briefs --and she insisted that it should be in different colors so it would be easier for me to avoid wearing a pair twice in a row.

My senses of dread though was minimized by noise and activity from the people around ---the noise from seminarians, parents and family members arguing or helping set up the cabinet and beds, the clanging of tbars and beds. somehow i was happy coz it was the first time i felt a sense of independence from my parents.

Anyways, the first night was fun too, especially setting up the mosquito net on the t-bars. and it was good too that the seniors helped us set up the beds. The beadle then was larry manda, he looked like a very huge guy to us during that time, i was actually very afraid of him. So when he said its lights off, i immediately went to bed. i had trouble sleeping but somehow after a while i managed to sleep.

after an hour or so to my deep embarrassment, i promptly rolled off my bed . good thing that being a very thin guy the mosquito net caught me and i didnt hit the floor. and also thanks to Glenn Pato and to Donor who kindly put me right back on my bed and never teased me about it the whole year they were there.
