I used to call him the “Great Pang-Bawi” The only somber and sane voice among the boisterous, rowdy crowd that the Class of ’83 was in its heyday. As a class, we could be considered crass and arrogant and too confident in our wise-ass ways. Except that it would not be fair, because we had Fr. Jimmy in our group, and he was the antithesis of all that.

To say that he was well-grounded and humble is a gross understatement. Fr. Imbo had this wise-beyond-his-years sense of self. He knew he was more than intelligent, and yet saw no sense in calling the world’s attention to it. He was an Oak among Cherry Blossoms, unspectacular in the display of his hues but definitely the steadiest of the lot. You could say he died as he lived, choosing the most quiet of ways, leaving in his sleep, leaving while all of us were asleep. He would have it no other way

Father Jimmy Barrozo, 44, died Thursday, Oct. 29, 2010, at the Catholic rectory in Meade.

He was the parochial administrator of St. John the Baptist, Meade; St. Anthony, Fowler; and St. Patrick, Plains.

Father Barrozo was born July 12, 1966, in Marikina , Metro Manila, Philippines, to Juanito Salazar and Celerina Antiado Barrozo. He was ordained to the priesthood Dec. 4, 1993, by the Most Rev. Jesus Y. Varela, bishop of Sorsogon, at Sts. Peter and Paul Cathedral in Sorsogon City.

Father Barrozo was a priest from the Diocese of Sorsogon in the Philippines. He began his assignment in the Diocese of Dodge City on Dec. 4, 2009. This was his only assignment in the United States.

He served as associate pastor at Immaculate Conception, Sorsogon, (1993-1994) and Sts. Peter and Paul Cathedral, (1994-1997). From 1997 to 2000, Father Barrozo served at Lady of Penafrancia Seminary at Sorsogon as spiritual director, academic formator and dean of students. His pastorates were at St. Raymond Nonnatus (2001-2005) and St. Michael the Archangel (2005-2009), both in Sorsogon.

Father Barrozo served his diocese in the Philippines as diocesan Internet program director; secretariat diocesan synod head; episcopal vicar; and as a member of the Board of Consultors and Presbyterial Council.

Survivors include his mother and five siblings.

He was preceded in death by his father.

The vigil service will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at St. John the Baptist Church, Meade, with Msgr. Angel Dy presiding. The funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Anthony Church, Fowler, with Bishop Ronald M. Gilmore presiding.

Friends may call from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Tuesday at Fidler-Orme-Bachman Mortuary, Meade. The Mass of Christian Burial and interment will take place later in the Diocese of Sorsogon.

Memorials can be sent to the Seminary Fund of the Diocese of Dodge City, PO Box 137, Dodge City, KS 67801.

You have all heard of the parable of the lost sheep, right? How about the lost shepherd? Its not in the Bible, but in the lores of the class of '83. The class " pambawi" ( sa mga kabuangan natun) Fr. Imbo Barrozo surfaced and happily we had an excuse to have the first of the get-togethers last August 13 at the Eastwood City. Fr. Imbo is about to leave for a three year assignment with Sorsogon's "sister" diocese Kansas. Aside from Jayhawks, Kansas is known for their excellent beef - basi lamang yadto si Baka-King, Cula, matuparan man ni Fr. Imbo.

Cacoy spent X-mas holidays with his parents in CA and visited family, friends and ex-classmates in Florida and Texas. We met for a few hours, had lunch; he came by the house, even visited my son at his school. It was nice to have been able to catch up with Cacoy and reminisce. We laughed a plenty remembering the times and experiences from OLPS. It was late in the day when we parted ways, after dinner matter of fact.

The Seminary Varsity will be joining the Sorsogon Juniors Basketball League on August 20 - September 08, 2009. Our varsity basketball team is under the able hands of our own Sano, Coach Aldin V. Ayo (batch 94). We would like to solicit the support of all Sano out there.

If you are around Sorsogon please be present during the scheduled games. We would like also to ask for suggestions on the OLPS "moniker" and not only that.... if any generous Sano would like to sponsor the team uniform, it would be highly appreciated.

For many years the Seminary has dominated the field of Basketball in Sorsogon but we had been out of the limelight for some time now. Our return to the field does not promise to bring back the golden days of Seminary Basketball but at least have our presence felt again. And with a dear hope that someday we shall rise and shine again.

Stop the Gas Station Construction in Bulusan Church

How To Choose A President In 2010: What Should We Look For In A Future Leader?

This article by Antonio G.M. La Viña, JSD, Professorial Lecturer, U.P.
College of Law and Dean, Ateneo School of Government, was originally
published in The U.P Forum, July 2009

“The enemy of the good is the perfect.” This is the adage I will bear in
mind when I enter the voting booth on the 10th of May, 2010. At that
time, I will probably have four or five candidates, possibly more, to
choose from. They are the ones who remain standing, with serious chances
of winning after the longest campaign in Philippine history.

All of the choices will be imperfect: if the country allowed it, one
choice would be a reform candidate - a non-“trapo” local government
official, a Christian preacher, a young councilor or an environmental
and sustainable agriculture activist. If the COMELEC or the Supreme
Court allow it (which I cannot imagine them doing given the clear
prohibition for any reelection under the Constitution), another choice
would be an impeached ex-President. Three or four senators from varying
backgrounds and perhaps a former Congressman turned Secretary of Defense
would complete the spectrum of options.

How will I choose a President in 2010? It is tempting to do this in a
very simple manner: to approach politics, like all things in the
Philippines, as personal. But to say that politics is personal can mean
two things. It can mean on one hand: Sino ang kakilala ko? Who is
closest to me? Who is the one I am most personally connected to? Or it
could mean: Ano ang alam ko sa kandidato? What do I know about a
candidate? I suppose, as a good citizen, I would choose a President
based on what I know about the candidate, rather than my personal
connections to a candidate. But wait, this is the Philippines: what I
know about a person comes not mainly from what she or he has done in her
or his public life but largely from the fact that I know him or her
personally.

Take for instance, one of the potential candidates, Defense Secretary
Gilberto Teodoro. I have known Gilbert for more than 20 years as we were
classmates in the UP College of Law. As someone who studied for the bar
exams in the same study group as Gilbert, I know him to be one of 2 or 3
of the most intelligent Filipinos that I have personally known, and I
have studied and worked with and taught thousands from 3-4 generations
in the last 30 years. More significantly, I know him also to be one of
the most patriotic, humble and honest public servants (and I have known
thousands as well), able to make hard choices even against his own
family and class interests. The discipline, professionalism and
leadership he has brought in his work in the Defense Department are good
qualities of a future President for this country. But does the country
have an appetite for a candidate supported by the present
administration? Will Secretary Teodoro be compromised and become
unelectable if he is endorsed by President Macapagal-Arroyo?

I also know Governors Ed Panlilio and Grace Padaca quite well. They
inspire me and many others: I look up to them. Both governors, potential
candidates for 2010, are founders and champions of the Kaya Natin
Movement that aim to espouse genuine change and ethical leadership in
our country. The movement seeks to promote genuine and lasting change in
our government by promoting transparency, social accountability, people
empowerment and electoral reforms. By upholding these values and
principles, Kaya Natin hopes to help make our government and our leaders
more responsive to the needs of the Filipino people and enable it to
deliver basic services to those who need it most in the most efficient
and effective way.

Together with Brother Eddie Villanueva, John Carlos de los Reyes,
Olongapo City Councilor (Ang Kapatiran Party 2010 Presidential
Candidate), and environmentalist Nicky Perlas, Governors Panlilio and
Padaca are considered by many to be non-traditional politicians and
reform candidates. All of these reform candidates will be running on a
bare bones, volunteer-manned campaign fueled by idealism and hope. Their
potential candidacies excite me but it is difficult to imagine any of
their campaigns prospering unless they unite and form a unified front.
Even then, the odds will be daunting.

We should also acknowledge that, given their lack or limited governance
record, the country is also taking a risk with these reformers. I would
have preferred that Governors Panlilio and Padaca finish three terms as
Governors first and that Brother Eddie, Councilor de los Reyes, and
Nicky acquire local executive experience before running for national
executive positions.

The good is of course not monopolized by the reform candidates. To me,
the candidacies of Senators Mar Roxas, Manny Villar, Loren Legarda,
Francis Escudero, Richard Gordon are attractive and merit consideration.

Behind the hoopla of the padyak commercials of Senator Roxas has a solid
record of implementing and legislating economic policies that have
created jobs and have benefited the poor. Senator Roxas, as Trade
Secretary and as Senator, has also been at the forefront of consumer
protections and defending our trade interests in the WTO. For example,
he has taken leadership, in the face of the opposition of the
multinational drug industry, to ensure cheap access to medicines by the
poor. His recent vote for CARPER (extending the agrarian reform law with
reforms) is something I will count in his favor as I make my decision on
who to vote for in 2010. Finally, I like the fact that Senator Roxas is
supported by people I have the highest respect for – from veteran
political and social activists like former Education Secretary Butch
Abad to young and imaginative campaign workers like Rose Romero and
Clare Amador.

Senator Villar also has a solid pro-poor and pro-development record, as
a businessman and a legislator. The passion with which he is conducting
his campaign is also attractive to many. I can personally attest to his
commitment to local development as reflected in the manner with which
Senator Villar supports capacity building of local governments all over
the country. I have met many local government officials who have told me
that find in Senator Villar someone who understands the challenges of
development that their local government units are facing. Finally, to
the extent that political courage and will is an important quality for
me in our future leaders, I will always remember Senator’s Villar’s
actions the night the House of Representatives impeached former
President Joseph Estrada.

Senator Legarda is also a real option for me as I decide who to vote for
in May 2010. Indeed, on substantive issues that I care deeply about,
such as peace in Mindanao and environmental issues, her record is
admirable. Through many years, I have personally seen how she has been a
passionate advocate for sustainable development. Through these years, I
have also been quite impressed with the work ethic of Senator Legarda
who has clearly put at the center of her life a passion to lead the
country to better times.

I do not know Senator Escudero as well as others in the UP College of
Law, not having the opportunity to teach him. But a viable candidacy of
a 40-year old politician who is explicitly appealing to the youth vote
is very tempting to support. The clarity and passion with which he
articulates his positions will serve Senator Escudero well if he is
elected as President.

While I see the positive aspects of the candidacies of Senator Roxas,
Villar, Legarda and Escudero, I am concerned that they do not have local
governance experience. Through the years that I have worked on
governance issues, not just in the Philippine but all over the world, I
have come to believe that the heart of governance, the place where it
matters most, is local governance. My hope is that one day, we will have
a President or a head of government that comes from the ranks of local
government officials. For this reason, I will include Senator Gordon
among the options I will consider, given his record as long time Mayor
of Olongapo. For the same reason, if the candidacies of MMDA Chairman
and former Bayani Fernando and Mayor Jejomar Binay became viable, I will
not necessarily rule them out as I make my choice.

Reflecting on these choices for President, I actually feel good about
what is in store for us in the 2010 Presidential elections. I think we
have a number of good options. Of the candidates I have mentioned in
this article, I could easily vote for any 3 or 4 of them.

So how will I choose a President in 2010 among the three or four that I
like? The Movement for Good Governance developed and the Moral Force
Movement has endorse a criteria that would enable us to select
transformational Leaders. They have also recommended a score card to use
to evaluate the 2010 candidates, for President and other options. It is
this criteria and scorecard that I will use and encourage others to
apply in answering the question - What should we look for in a future
leader?

Our future leaders should be transformational leaders who bring about
change in individuals, institutions and the country to build a just,
humane, prosperous and genuinely democratic Philippine society.
Transformational leaders promote the moral values of integrity, social
responsibility, and love of country through their practice of effective,
empowering, and ethical leadership.

An effective leader is competent, decisive and proactive and has the
track record to support this. As Kapitan ng Barko, she/he has the
ability to steer the ship of government, to arrive at the destination of
a prosperous and just society. Sample indicators for effective
leadership are:

Does the candidate have a vision of society with a clear,comprehensive and viable platform of government? Does this translate toconsistent and clear positions on key issues (e.g., human rights,agrarian reform, education , etc.”
Does the candidate work hard, get things done, and demonstrate political will?
Does the candidate have a sound and effective record
As a legislator (in terms of number and quality of bills);
As an official of the executive department (in terms of effective,innovative and sustainable programs)
As a leader of citizen organizations or business enterprises (in termsof effective, innovative and sustainable programs)

An empowering leader is participative/engaging, inspiring, and is
committed to social justice. As a servant leader, a Lingkod ng Bayan,
she/he sets a good example for all to follow and work together.
Indicators include:

Does the candidate involve stakeholders in decision-making, and inimplementing and evaluating policies, programs and projects?
Does the candidate promote social justice? Addresses basic needs (food, health, education, shelter) and promotes interests of the disadvantaged (women, indigenous people, handicapped, etc.)?
Does the candidate inspire unity, trust, and hope in people?
Does the candidate prepare others to be leaders to succeed him/her?

Finally, an ethical leader is a Katiwala ng Bayan: God-fearing, has
moral ascendancy and integrity, a clean and honest track record, and has
proven integrity. Inidcators are:

Does the candidate demonstrate good moral character (lifestyle); have a circle of associates (allies, backers, party, broad-based volunteers) who are people of integrity and are pro-reform; and transcend self-interest and sacrifice personal/familial/vested interests for the common good (political dynasty, conflict of interest, nepotism)?
Does the candidate: advocate and practice meritocracy in government; personally comply with laws (self, family and subordinates); prosecute/punish offenders; potect and promote human rights; and take responsibility for his/her actions?
Can the candidate be trusted, based on his/her record and background, to use the national wealth and resources for the common good and to practice transparent use and accounting of public funds?
Has the candidate acted to expose injustice and corruption and has this led to prosecution and/or enactment of a law or other concrete actions?

“The enemy of the good is the perfect.” I will remember this principle
when I vote on the 10th of May, 2010. But I will vote with confidence
and optimism. I do so knowing that I will vote not for the least or
lesser evil but for the best among a number of imperfect but good
choices. If many of us do this, if enough of us do this, we will change
the country.

The death itself was a major body blow, but I had no idea the logistics it required would be a burden quite as heavy.

The one thing that sustained me during the first few days, when I had to arrange everything from the casket to the burial ground to the legal paperwork to the funeral mass to getting the rest of my family home, was the support of relatives and friends. Especially friends. I got by with the tremendous, unstinting support of my childhood buddies, those who've stayed behind and built their lives in the province, and who knew my father, were even friends with him.

Specifically, my former seminary classmates, a couple of them priests now, the rest married, who never left my side and took on the extra chores of chasing the required documentation from the hospital to the city hall to the parish office, freeing me to stay by my father's side and receive visitors while I worked the phones frantically to get the rest of the family to surmount the freak floods and rains that repeatedly derailed their travel plans.

Fr. Erestain is the new OLPS Minor Rector

The Very Reverend Father Roger Joseph B. Erestain, JCL (OLPS Batch1990-1994) is the new Rector of OLPS Minor. Aside from being the Rector, he serves concurrently as the Vice-Chancellor of the Diocese; a member of the Judicial Board, Seminary Council, and Seminary Board; and the Board secretary of SAPEPAU and GNSFI. He was appointed as OIC Rector of the seminary last Holy Thursday, April 9, 2009. He will assume office at the start of the school year 2009-2010.

Joining him in managing the seminary will be Rev. Mr. Edmon Benzon. Rev. Edmon was ordained to the order of deacons just recently (March 26, 2009). The seminary is still waiting for the return of the persons who went on study leave abroad.

Rev. Fr. Jasper D. Valdez, who was the Prefect of Seminarians for the past 5 years, will be assigned as parochial vicar of the Parish of St. Anthony of Padua in Gubat, Sorsogon.

Congrats Fr.Erestain and we pray and hope that you will bring OLPS Minor to even greater prestige and renown. :-)

The meeting started at 8:00PM with Atty Cubias presiding. The following concerns were discussed :

1. Tarpaulin Banner (standard size per batch), T-shirt

Totep Perez presented Dondee Delgado’s T – shirt designs. The group selected the plain cream design however with some revisions, viz, logo and motto either in black or green.

Tarpaulin banners will be produced by each batch.

2. Information Dissemination

Totep Perez to furnish Tato Marcial, Tootsie Cubias, Fr. Egay Cleofe copy of invitation letter cum solicitation for rice subsidy project, Atty. Cubias to reproduce letter and obtainMons Pax’s signature, Tato marcial to strategize distribution with the assistance of Fr. Egay.

Totep Perez to produce public service announcements, plugging material or press release.

3. Alumni Directory

Tato Marcial to present available directory next meeting, updating of such must be done prior to homecoming.

4. Confirmation of Attendance to Homecoming

The group projected an estimated 200 pax attendance based on previous homecoming records.

6. Homecoming Activities

Ferdie Marbella represented Batch 83. Totep Perez presented Batch 83’s proposal based on Gerry Arnedo’s email to Mons Pax hereunder stated :

“This is regarding the proposed plans for the homecoming. From the minutes forwarded to our class ( Aug 1, meeting), the following activities/contributions were assigned to batch ’83:

Fellowship ( Oct 17 dinner/fellowship ( food/raffle prizes/band entertainment/lights and sound system)
Breakfast/snack/games/ referees/parade snacks/tarpaulins/Mass stipend –estimate is P 45,000
The batch early on during the year committed to Fr. Egay Cleofe that we will support the upcoming Sangkan which OLPS is hosting. We committed to the purchase of tables for pingpong, pool, board games, etc.-The batch expects to raise approximately another P 45,000 to P 50,000 for this endeavor.

We were wondering if the following can be an option for the homecoming, because if you consider all of these the cost to Batch ’83 will be rather high ( P 90,000+ already solely for items 2 and 3 only). We have not even accounted for the expenses we will incur for the program we want to have for the fellowship night.

raise the registration to P 200 instead of proposal of P50 to help fund for dinner fellowship or
we drop item 2 ( open the canteen on a buy your own snacks, and we get referee’s from among the alumni) and use the 45,000 instead to pay for the dinner on the 17th. I am sure the batch will be more than willing to add a little bit more so that there will be enough food for 200pax”

The group adopted option # 2, stated thus :

1. Batch 83 to sponsor Fellowship Night
2. OLPS to open canteen, Alumni to buy snacks or buy their own
3. Alumni to act as referees

Further, the group agreed that :

OLPS will provide breakfast on October 18, 2008, Saturday consisting of pan de sal and bottomless coffee.
Motorcade instead of parade on same date to cut cost on transport and snacks for Drum and Bugle Corps.

Thus, the following is the revised Homecoming Schedule :

October 17, 2008, Friday
1 PM – Registration (fee still pegged at P50.00 minimum)
3 PM – Motorcade around Sorsogon City
4PM – Games
7 PM – Fellowship Night

October 18, 2008, Saturday
7AM – Breakfast
9 AM – Mass cum General Assembly
12 Noon – Batch reunions

7. Other Matters

Totep to remind Joey Cubias to submit documents to Tom Sementela for Financial Statement preparation per requirement for SEC Registration.

1. Rice Subsidy

A. Ceremonial turnover of initial 3 sacks of rice donation was done by the Alumni with the presence of minor seminarians and formators. Donors were Robert Maullon, Ceazar Escobedo and Bernie Donor (n.b. Joey Cubias to donate 1 sack on September 2008)

B. Other Pledges for Rice Subsidy Project are the following :

Totep to produce pro forma letter with reply slip to be distributed to all alumni, together with invitation for homecoming with attached schedule.

Totep Perez to contact Dondee Delgado for T – shirt (200 pcs., with collar, color yellow or cream with embroidered OLPS logo colored black) & tarpaulin design, size & cost. Presentation of design due next meeting.

3. Information Dissemination

With the absence of OLPS Alumni PRO Renato Marcial, the item was declared unfinished business. However it was agreed that the invitation letter may serve for purposes of information dissemination and coordination with Parish Priests for announcements during mass is also suggested.

4. Alumni Directory

Again, with the absence of OLPS Alumni PRO Renato Marcial, the item was declared unfinished business. Totep Perez to notify him on the unfinished businesses.

5. Confirmation of Attendance to Homecoming

All attendees in the meeting are appointed point persons for their batch. Invitation letters will be coursed through to batch coordinators.

6. Homecoming Activities

The group confirmed the proposed program of activities with no amendments as of yet. The alumni request the confirmation of batch 83 for their commitment to sponsor the Alumni Homecoming and shoulder the expenses. Totep is tasked to contact Batch 83.
Atty. Cubias suggested to explore possibility on having basketball match with St. Gregory Seminary Alumni. Atty. Cubias to coordinate including the preparation of plaque or trophy. Ceazar Escobedo and Tony Detera to form the team and act as coaches.

7. Other Matters

SEC Registration – pending the submission of the FS, Tom Sementela, Joey Cubias & Atty. Cubias as point persons.
Alumni Affairs Office – pending the draft of official letter to OLPS Rector c/o Totep, Msgr. Monje as signatory.

Meeting Proper

The meeting started at 8:30PM with Msgr. Monje presiding. The following concerns were discussed :

1. Tarpaulin Banner (standard size per batch), T-shirt

Alumni Foundation will finance production/printing of tarpaulin banners & t- shirts, the batches will pay during homecoming. Batch 87 as parade committee/secretariat is tasked to determine number of pieces to produce and cost.

A good quality t - shirt with collar (color – cream or light yellow) and embroidered with OLPS logo (color – black) will be produced as official alumni t-shirt. (Note : An unresolved discussion came up that for income generating purposes, these t-shirts may be considered for sale to non - alumni as souvenir item but at a higher prize.)

2. Information Dissemination

It was suggested that the Information, Documentation, Publication Committee must meet A.S.A.P. to strategize. Mr. Robert Maullon was tasked to coordinate. Mr. Renato Marcial was appointed as Alumni PRO.

3. Alumni Directory

Mr. Marcial already coordinated with Sr. Myrna Dioquino who informed him that the Alumni list is complete and ready for pick up anytime.

4. Confirmation of Attendance to Homecoming

Appoint point person/coordinator per batch is wiling to volunteer. Communication exchange will be done through blogspot postings and text messaging.

5. Homecoming Activities with Projected Expense

Recently posted sa OLPS Minor... a big box of goodies from Batch 83!!!!. salamatonon tabi mga Batch 83! uragon talaga!!!! hehehehe

ok sin-o kaya na sunod na maging generous batch!

The package from the USA, (particularly from Sano Arnel Deyto [B83]) arrived this morning (july 20) here at OLPS. It contained sports paraphernalia promised by Batch '83, in connection with OLPS' preparation for the upcoming Sangkan 3 this November.

Here are the particulars: 2 pcs. Basketball; 1 pc. Volleyball; 1 pc. soccerball; 1 bucket pingpong balls; 1 pc. Football; 1 ball pump; and 4 pcs. basketball nets; and 5 pcs. dart boards (this includes the 2 pcs of dart boards brought here last summer).

Aside from this package, Batch '83 committed themselves for the purchase/making of pool tables and tables for Table Tennis.

Meeting Proper

The meeting was called to order at 8 PM with Atty. Jess Fumera presiding. Mr. Totep Perez read the minutes of the previous meeting. The body approved the contents of the minutes of the meeting.

Atty. Fumera led the group in the discussion of the matters arising from the previous meeting:

1. On Rice subsidy :

Mr. Tato Marcial reported that 10 seminarians are having difficulty in complying with the required 3 sacks of rice yearly, thus, a shortfall of 30 sacks in the year.

Fr. Egay Cleofe informed the group that he will provide names of those seminarians and inquired if they will become direct beneficiaries of the Alumni Foundation and in effect, they are no longer obliged to give the required sacks of rice. The group discussed on the matter and arrived at the decision that the OLPS is the sole beneficiary of the Alumni Foundation who will receive directly the rice subsidy. It is now the discretion of the OLPS administration if they will still require the 10 seminarians to give rice.

Mr. Bernie Donor informed the group that per sack costs P1,250 per sack or P25 per kilo, thus a total of P37,500.00 for 30 sacks of rice shortfall. It was suggested that the Alumni Foundation will write letter to NFA Manager to purchase rice, Totep to draft the letter, Monsignor Monje to sign. The source of fund will come from donations from alumni, post the information at alumni blogspots.

2. On Financial Statement :

Mr. Joey Cubias, the Alumni Treasurer was absent. Mr Tom Sementela suggested that Mr. Perez must remind Mr. Cubias to submit the records of transactions for him to prepare the Financial Statement.

3. On General Information Sheet:

Atty. Tootsie Cubias was absent, again, Mr. perez was tasked to remind Atty. Cubias to submit the General Information Sheet.

4. On Alumni Directory:

Mr. Marcial to coordinate with the Registrar Mam Nikki Halcon, Sr. Myrna Dioquino & Atty. Cubias.

5. On Fellowship Night:

Mr. Perez reported that he met Atty. Alwin Talde who informed him that Batch 83 had a meeting in Manila to discuss their sponsorship of the event by shouldering the financial cost and possible production of Film Documentary about OLPS c/o Film maker Larry Manda.

6. On Destroyed Fence:

Mr. Marcial took picture of the damaged portion and posted the same on the blog. However, Fr. Cleofe informed the group that there is a plan to construct an access road in the same area. Atty. Fortes suggested that the group must remove the item from the Alumni’s concern based on the aforementioned plan. The group agreed.

7. On Tarpaulin Banners:

The group decided to put the item for further discussion next meeting.

8. On Establishment of Alumni Affairs Office:

Mr. Perez informed Fr. Cleofe on the rationale behind the establishment of an Alumni Affairs Ofice. Fr. Cleofe said that seminarians are capable to be assigned, for the meantime at the alumni desk that will soon be transformed into an office. Mr perez will draft a formal letter of request to the Rector, Msgr. Monje to sign & discuss details with Fr. Cleofe, the Rector.

Meeting Proper

The meeting was called to order at 7PM with Msgr. Pax Monje presiding. Mr. Totep Perez reported to the group the matters discussed and actions taken during the previous meeting :

1. Formation of OLPS Alumni Foundation Interim Board
2. Petition to Revive the OLPS Alumni Foundation with SEC
3. Reorganization of SANO
4. Alumni Homecoming in October 2008

Mr. Perez presented Resolution No. 001, Series of 2008, Resolution Authorizing its Interim Chairman Msgr. Francisco Monje to File a Petition for the Revival of the Foundation’s Registration with SEC and for other Purpose. The same was turned over to Atty. Cubias for proper action.

Atty. Cubias called the attention of Mr. Perez to mention in the previous minutes posted on the website the special project on rice subsidy for the OLPS.

The group further the clarified the procedures for the project as follows :

Ask OLPS (thru Sr. Myrna) on the actual number of rice shortage (sacks) per month. Mr. Tato Marcial will coordinate with OLPS.
OLPS Foundation to provide for the shortfall by establishing partnership with NFA with Mr. Bernie Donor as coordinator. OLPS will get rice directly from NFA.
OLPS PNB Account Number will be posted at alumni websites for the alumni to send contributions for the project.
The account numbers are : 478-811387-6 (PhP), 478-700725-8 (US$)

Next discussed was the revival of OLPS Foundation. To meet the requirements the following tasks and in-charge were identified :

Financial Statement, Registration c/o Joey Cubias & Tom Sementela
General Information Sheet – Atty. Jess Fumera
Mr. Salvador Villaroya to act as Accountant
Coordination with SEC – Atty. Cubias

Another item discussed is the need to update the Alumni Directory. Mr. Tato Marcial was tasked to coordinate with OLPS (Mam Nikki).

Regarding the sponsorship of Batch 83 for the Fellowship, Mr. Marcial informed the group that Atty. Talde is set to meet his batch mates in Manila next week.

Other matters discussed were :

Repair of portion of OLPS fence, Mr. Marcial to take pictures and post at blog.
Provision of tarpaulins per batch during annual homecoming.
All attending alumni appointed as batch coordinators. Dr. Leocadio as point person for senior batches.
Information dissemination strategy : pulpit, tri – media, cyber media, mobile phone
Establishment of Alumni affairs office, Alumni website c/o appointed senior seminarians, letter of request to be sent to Rector.

Next meeting is set on July 18, 2008, Friday, 6 PM at OLPS. Mr. Marcial to coordinate with Fr. Egay Cleofe. The meeting was adjourned at 9PM.

Tentative 2008 Homecoming sked.

The group agreed to create an ad-hoc committee to revive the OLPS Alumni Foundation, officers elected are :

The problem with the future is that we don’t know how it will unfold. We can make some logical predictions based on history and observation, but there is always that x of an unknown that no one can anticipate. The vastness of predictive studies, and you can add the unscientific ones, could only comprehend things that have transpired.

Neat intro, huh? No? I thought I’d make a great impression. So what am I anxious about? In two measly weeks (as of the time I’m writing this piece) I’ll be joining the club of the big four-oh; entering the twilight zone where, they say, everything gets bad or good depending how you live your life. I’m the eldest in the batch so I get to become forty first. This post is about being that.

Beowulf back when

Remember the legendary english teacher Ms. Resurreccion and the equally legendary required english lit topic --Beowulf? Here's Gibbs' entertaining writeup about them... (i hope ms. rexy is doing fine these days, any news about her?)

Aha, so it's pronounced “BAY-wulf.” All these years my high school classmates and I have pronounced it “BEE-wulf,” like how were taught in English literature. The release of the movie should prompt us to consider holding one of our usual reunions just so we could officially adopt the proper pronunciation of the name.

You see, “Beowulf” isn't just a story to us. Mention the word, and it brings back a lot of happy memories. We're silly sentimental SOBs like that.

We learned about Beowulf and Grendel and Grendel's monster mother not from Neil Gaiman, but in traditional high school English literature. I'm not sure if students today are still taught this old English epic poem. Our teacher was Mrs. Resurreccion, a white-haired, motherly, tiny bird of a lady, all 4'11" of her (perhaps even shorter).

tree planting sa minor

one of the activities during the homecoming was tree planting. this is a good idea since OLPS is almost arot na with most of the tress felled down by past typhoons.

so if you should find yourself in sorsogon one of these days, take a little time out to plant a tree in OLPS. it would be cool to go back again in a few years or so and see your tree all grown up di ba?

Father Alejandre V. Galias excommunicated

this jolted me a bit when i read inquirer.net today. seems like a sorsogon priest has been excommunicated. his name sounds familiar but i dont remember his face at all. anyways here's the story

A Catholic priest from Sorsogon, excommunicated by the Church for breaking the “seal of confession,” said on Thursday he planned to appeal his case before Sorsogon Bishop Arturo Bastes and the Catholic Church hierarchy in the Philippines.
Father Alejandre V. Galias told the Philippine Daily Inquirer that he would seek an audience with Bishop Bastes and explain his side. He said he would ask the bishop to revoke his excommunication and restore his authority to perform his priestly duties.

When interviewed on Thursday, the 58-year-old priest said he was continuing his normal routine as priest. But when asked if he was still saying masses, Galias refused to comment.
Galias said he found his excommunication questionable as he was not given due process.

In a decree dated September 21, 2007, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Sorsogon declared the penalty of “latae sententiae excommunication” against Galias

ok, time to do this again. nothing much to share. seems like everybody's busy and the blogs aren't updated regularly anymore. its also a bummer that by the looks of it there would be no 2007 Homecoming.

the gang celebrated donnie boy's bday (guested by no less than regine velazquez and ogie alcasid)

they're also in heavy training for the coming basketball game on Oct. 12 where they will battle it out with the Pfizer Managers for b-ball supremacy. maybe we can go and cheer them on. or ipangadyi na lang hehehehe.

Adi tabi an pinturahan. Looks like laen lang tolo (3) o upat (4) na balde sadi an kaipuhan, tsk, tsk, tsk.

According to Fr. Rector, an estimate na in-present saiya san pintor would be about Php 20,000 (kaopod na daw an sa labor) for this area.

Nano tabi sa pagkita nindo mga classmates? Maybe we can shoulder half of it, or, maybe (and it is very possible naman diba Tidi?) the entire papintura sadi na part san beloved OLPS naton.
Actually pati an facade nangangaipo naman sin makeover. Pero ini nalang muna siguro an hatagaan ta sin priority as a batch. Sentimental ini na part, if you remember the stunts of Luking and Tidi dida sa second floor, hehehe...

Feedback asap please. Hopefully the Sorsogon-based batchmates could meet asap to finalize things out.

PS.Kun natatandaan nindo, amo ini an narugado san typhoons Milenyo and Reming. Mayad ngani kay naayos man in time for the school year. My first day/first night sa OLPS

Sige share tayo ng ating first day or first night sa OLPS. Sige ako muna:

I was very nervous coming to the seminary. I absolutely didnt know anybody coz i was the only one from Castilla. Most of my classmates had friends who were also incoming freshmen and were classmates during elementary. Everything was bit strange- the people, the smell of the dorm and the CR. the dorm with its rows of bed covered with white bed covers reminded me of a hospital.

I had fun arranging my stuff in the cabinet. i felt like a grown-up. It amused me also that my mother religiously followed the clothing list given by the seminary - so i vividly remember having 12 pairs of briefs --and she insisted that it should be in different colors so it would be easier for me to avoid wearing a pair twice in a row.

My senses of dread though was minimized by noise and activity from the people around ---the noise from seminarians, parents and family members arguing or helping set up the cabinet and beds, the clanging of tbars and beds. somehow i was happy coz it was the first time i felt a sense of independence from my parents.

Anyways, the first night was fun too, especially setting up the mosquito net on the t-bars. and it was good too that the seniors helped us set up the beds. The beadle then was larry manda, he looked like a very huge guy to us during that time, i was actually very afraid of him. So when he said its lights off, i immediately went to bed. i had trouble sleeping but somehow after a while i managed to sleep.

after an hour or so to my deep embarrassment, i promptly rolled off my bed . good thing that being a very thin guy the mosquito net caught me and i didnt hit the floor. and also thanks to Glenn Pato and to Donor who kindly put me right back on my bed and never teased me about it the whole year they were there.
